Specializations
Cataract
A cataract is a clouding of the eye's natural lens, leading to blurred or reduced vision. It develops gradually, often due to aging, but can also result from injury, certain medical conditions (like diabetes), prolonged UV exposure, or genetics. Symptoms include blurry vision, difficulty seeing at night, faded colors, and sensitivity to light. Cataracts are treatable with surgery, where the cloudy lens is replaced with an artificial one, restoring clear vision.
Vitreo Retina
Vitreo-retinal procedures are specialized eye surgeries for conditions affecting the vitreous and retina, such as retinal detachment, macular holes, and diabetic retinopathy. Common treatments include vitrectomy (removal of vitreous gel), retinal detachment repair, macular hole surgery, epiretinal membrane peeling, intravitreal injections, laser photocoagulation, and endophthalmitis treatment. These procedures, often performed under local or general anesthesia, help restore or preserve vision in patients with severe retinal diseases.
Pediatric Retina
Pediatric retina refers to the diagnosis and treatment of retinal disorders in children, which differ from adult retinal conditions due to developing eye structures. Common conditions include retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), congenital retinal detachment, Coats' disease, persistent fetal vasculature (PFV), and juvenile macular degeneration. Treatment options range from laser therapy, cryotherapy, and intravitreal injections to surgical interventions like vitrectomy or retinal detachment repair. Early detection and specialized care are crucial to preserving vision and preventing lifelong impairment.
LASER THERAPY
Laser therapy is a medical treatment that uses focused light to treat various eye conditions by sealing, reshaping, or removing tissue. In ophthalmology, it is commonly used for retinal disorders (like diabetic retinopathy, retinal tears, and macular edema), glaucoma (to reduce intraocular pressure), and after cataract surgery (to clear lens capsule clouding). Types of laser treatments include photocoagulation (to seal blood vessels), photodisruption (to remove obstructions), and photoablation (to reshape the cornea). Laser therapy is minimally invasive, precise, and often performed as an outpatient procedure.
Intraocular lenses (IOLs)
Intraocular lenses (IOLs) are artificial lenses implanted in the eye to replace the natural lens, typically after cataract surgery or for vision correction. Made of biocompatible materials like acrylic or silicone, IOLs come in different types, including monofocal (fixed focus for distance or near), multifocal (for multiple distances), toric (for astigmatism correction), and accommodating (mimicking natural lens flexibility). These lenses improve vision by focusing light properly on the retina, reducing or eliminating the need for glasses or contact lenses.
